Frequently Asked Questions
Hawaii Volcano Lodging
Below are some frequently asked questions our guests have had in regards to Hawaii Volcano lodging with us. Please contact us directly for additional questions on Volcano Hawaii lodging.
- Q: I'm trying to book a room online, but when I check availability, the room does not show up. How can I book it?
- A: Rooms that are already booked will not show up as available. If the room you want does not show up in the availability, that means that someone else has already booked for that night OR another night during your length of stay. Please choose an alternate! You may also try and contact us directly; sometimes, existing reservations can be moved to accommodate your request.
- Q: I don't understand what you offer; what is your setup?
- A: We are a collection of "chalets" on top of Kilauea Volcano, hence, we are: The Chalet Kilauea Collection. The collection is comprised of 3 small "chalets" or boutique hotels in Volcano Village. Each "chalet" is only a few blocks from another. Our special standard "chalet" is the Chalet Kilauea. Our standard "chalet" is the Lokahi Lodge. Our basic "chalet" is the Volcano Hale. Each "chalet" has about 6 rooms to choose from (depending upon your travel needs and style). To choose a room(s) at a particular "chalet" go to the left side navigation bar and choose "accommodations." Each "chalet" will be displayed. Choose the "chalet" of interest. The next page will display the rooms in THAT "chalet." Choose the room(s) of interest! Each "chalet" is still only 1 minute from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and around the corner from all the village shops and restaurants.
- Q: Where is The Chalet Kilauea Collection located?
- A: We are located at 4,000 feet in a cool, insect-free rainforest environment 1 minute from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, USA: 19-4178 Wright Road, Volcano Village, Hawaii 96785
- Q: Are 1-night stays OK?
- A: Sure! However, you may feel a little rushed. Most travelers would agree that one should spend at least 2 nights. Not only is the Big Island more than 4,000 square miles (about 2.5 hours travel from one side to the next), but the National Park has too much to offer. At about 500 square miles, the national park involves a decent amount of driving in order to explore red lava, lava fields, sulfur banks, craters, fern grottos, trails, petroglyphs, and more. In addition, once you arrive on the east side of Hawaii, you'll be glad you have time to enjoy its many wonders.
- Q: Is there shuttle service from the airport?
- A: NO. Even if there was, the Big Island and national park are too vast to make that service practical. One needs to rent a vehicle in order to experience the sights. We do offer discounted rental vehicles on our website. To reserve a vehicle, click on "specials" on the left navigation bar!
- Q: Check-in is from 3pm-5pm daily, but can I check-in AFTER that?
- A: We are available for check-in from 3pm-5pm daily. You can arrive after 5pm, however, the front desk will be closed. We will leave a package with instructions at the front door for all arrivals after 5pm. However, guests arriving after 5pm are still required to check-in at the front desk. You may do so the following morning. We open each day at 7:30am. NOTE: we encourage arriving prior to 5pm if possible. Firstly, the visitor's center in the park will close at 5pm; the park is open 24 hours, however, without the information from the rangers at the visitor's center, you may find it difficult to maximize your time in the park. Secondly, the high majority of our guests agree that Volcano Village is easy to navigate for the first time in DAYLIGHT, but not so easy for the first time at NIGHT (it really can be frustrating for first-timers). Thirdly, most restaurants and shops in the Village start closing at 7pm (stores) and 8:30pm (restaurants).
- Q: Check-in is from 3pm-5pm daily, but can I check-in BEFORE that?
- A: You can arrive prior to 3pm, however, the room is not guaranteed to be ready for arrival until 3pm.
- Q: Is there REALLY always lava flowing in the park?
- A: YES. Kilauea Volcano covers a large area of land (approximately 500 square miles), therefore, the location can (and in fact often) varies. We recommend checking with the Visitor's Center in the national park in person daily to identify key locations and helpful information. While the national park NEVER closes, the visitor's center in the park does close. The visitor's center is open from 8am-5pm daily. We always recommend arriving in the area during this time to take advantage of the visitor's center!
- Q: What are your reservation policies?
- A: All rates are based on double occupancy (2 people/room) and are subject to change without notice. Each additional person requires a nightly charge of $25.00 plus taxes. Bedding beyond existing bedding will consist of a twin-sized floor foam mat, typically acceptable for children. We are a small family-owned operation. As such, our policies may differ from those of larger operations or larger hotels. MOST reservations have the following policy: Your booking will have a 100% booking fee secured at time of booking. This fee will be applied to your reservation total on the day of your arrival only. Therefore, upon arrival, you will have a credit of 100% and an outstanding balance of $0.00. The booking fee is non-refundable in the event of a cancellation made within 72 hours of arrival. 85% of the booking fee is refundable in the event of a cancellation made with more than 72 hours notice. Early departures are not possible. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to the above. Facility exclusive use reservations have a different policy. Please confirm your policy by clicking the "policies" link located at the footer of every page of our website.

- Q: Do I need a 4-wheel drive vehicle?
- A: NO. In fact, rental agencies dis-allow travel into areas which would require a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The vast majority of areas of interest have no need for a 4-wheel drive vehicle as all the roads are paved and in excellent condition.
- Q: What are your office hours?
- A: Our office is open from 7:30am-11:30am and 1:30pm-5pm daily. We are available for check-in from 3pm-5pm daily. You can arrive after 5pm, however, the front desk will be closed. - Q: I hear the East side of Hawaii receives a decent amount of rain. Will it be raining when I arrive?
- A: Many would argue that East Hawaii respresents some of the most beautiful lands in the world. We are located at an elevation of 4,000 feet (literally on top of Kilauea Volcano) in a magnificent and extremely rare rainforest. That being said, our rains are not like most rains. Our rain is usually "heavy cloud." Occassionally we receive a downpour, but often it is a gentle whisper of moisture from the gods. In summary, each day usually sees sun AND rain (heavy cloud).
- Q: Where are the beaches?
- A: There are several great beach retreats in East Hawaii. The world famous turtle refudge beach know as black sands beach is about 45 minutes from Volcano. In addition, there are several other locations about 1 hour from Volcano. Please take a look at our "interactive map" by using the left side navigation bar and selection "attractions."
