The `Ohi`a Lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) is a Hawai`ian evergreen tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae; it is endemic to six Hawai`ian islands, including Hawai`i - The Big Island. It reaches heights of over 50 feet and produces a brilliant flower display of fiery-red to buttercup-yellow colors. Hawai`ian legend teaches that `Ohi`a and Lehua were united by Pele (the fire goddess) due to their strong love for each other.  After this union, `Ohi`a Lehua forests became sacred to Pele.  Picking an `Ohi`a Lehua blossom typically brings forth tears (in the form of rain) as the lovers are separated.
