Laupahoehoe Train Museum

The train museum is very unique.  As you head North from Hilo on Highway 19, just beyond the 25 mile marker, you will begin to see the town of Laupahoehoe.  On the left you will see the Train Museum operated by a small number of volunteers whose purpose is to honor the colorful history of the Hilo Railroad, which was created in 1899 and terminated in 1946, when railroad tracks and facilities were irreparably damaged by a devastating tidal wave (tsunami).  The museum is housed in an old railway employee home which is furnished as it would have been in the 1930’s.  With many railroad artifacts and memorabilia from “days gone by” coupled with the grounds planted with tropical fruit trees and ornamentals, this is a lovely place to visit.
